Kaya ( Hokkien : , POJ : Ka-ia) is a coconut jam native to Southeast Asian countries such as Malaysia , Indonesia , the Philippines and Singapore .

Kaya is made from sugar , eggs and coconut milk and flavored with the extract of leaves of the screw tree . All ingredients are first mixed well and then stirred on a low heat until the sugar is completely caramelized, i.e. the mass has thickened.

The color of the natural kaya is reddish brown due to the caramelized sugar.
