history

Former colonial warriors at Kolonialstein in 1933

The Royal Saxon Military Association of China and Africa Warriors decided in 1903 (other source 1909) to erect a “State Colonial War Memorial” in Leipzig for the soldiers who died in the various colonial wars. Due to differences within the association, the order for the eight and a half meter high monument was not given to the Leipzig sculptor Georg Huth until early 1914. Lack of money due to the First World War prevented the execution of the order.

After the First World War , the German Reich no longer had any colonies, and instead of soldiers, the lost colonies were remembered. At the end of the 1920s, the 1.2 m high boulder was set and was labeled: “German | Remember your | Colonies ”. It became a memorial for colonial revisionist circles.

After the Second World War , the inscription was removed. The stone is on the list of cultural monuments of the State Office for Monument Preservation Saxony (ID No. 09263841).
