The Komet Gerolf Pöhle & Co. GmbH , headquartered in the Saxon village of Großpostwitz is a company in the food sector. Various food products are offered under the Komet brand. The focus is on ice cream powder, dessert and baking mixes .

history

The company was founded in 1924 as a Komet pasta factory by the master baker Albert Umlauf and his son-in-law, the banker Georg Pöhle. First, macaroni and other types of pasta were made on a small scale.

In 1933 the company, which had previously produced in a backyard, moved to its own premises. From 1938 the company was run by Georg Pöhle alone. Under his leadership, production rose to 800 tons of pasta per year by 1944.

After Pöhle's death in 1958, his son, Gerolf Pöhle, took over the company and continued to run it with state participation in the GDR.

Around 1960 Gerolf Pöhle and his wife Regina Pöhle developed an ice cream powder , the first ice cream powder for the production of ice cream in the household on the GDR market. Mixtures for commercial use were later produced, which were the main focus of production in the 1970s.

In December 1963 the company building was largely destroyed in a fire, and in 1964 it was rebuilt and expanded.

The expropriation and the conversion to the state-owned enterprise (VEB) Komet egg pasta and ice cream powder factory took place in 1972. After ice cream powder gained in importance in the 1970s, pasta production was completely given up in the 1980s. In addition, there was the production of cake glaze ( gelatine ) through the incorporation of another company.

After the fall of the Wall, Komet was reprivatised on April 1, 1990 into a sole proprietorship founded by Gerolf Pöhle and converted into a GmbH in 1991, the shareholders of which came from family members of the Pöhle family. Baking mixes and various dessert powders (pudding powder) are introduced as new products, while ready-to-use ice cream powder and cake icing remained in the range. In particular, the pancake mix introduced in 1990 was well received by consumers and, according to the company, is still the market leader in the new federal states.

In 2013 the company had 26 employees.
