The Committee Against Bird Slaughter , partly in English spelling Committee Against Bird Slaughter (CABS) , is a registered charity based in Bonn, which in the area of biodiversity and animal welfare in wild birds is active. The association sees itself as an action group that becomes active where wild birds are pursued by bird catchers , hunters or animal dealers. As a nature conservation association recognized by the Federal Environment Ministry , the committee is also involved in legislative procedures at federal level.

Focus of work

The aim of the Committee against Bird Murder is the prohibition of hunting wild birds, regardless of whether they are shotguns , traps or nets.

The association has two main focuses:

  • The work against hunting and bird trapping in Europe and
  • the campaign against international trade in wild birds.

Against bird trapping and bird hunting - be it with traps, nets or the shotgun - the bird conservationists take action primarily with their migratory bird protection camps in Italy , France , Malta and Cyprus . With voluntary helpers and in cooperation with the police, illegal bird traps, fishing nets and liming rods are collected and poachers are caught in the act. Every year around 30,000 nets and traps are seized and more than 300 poachers are caught. In addition, the committee does public relations work such as collecting signatures and protest campaigns and is politically against the hunt in the affected governments as well as in the European Commission in Brussels. In 2005 and 2006, Hirschfeld and Heyd created documentation on the scope and effects of bird hunting in European countries. In this publication - published in the Reports on Bird Protection - they estimate the number of legally shot and reported birds annually at 100 million based on the individual statistics of the European countries.

The committee takes action against the trade in wild birds with high-profile campaigns, protest campaigns, expert reports and actions against criminal animal traders. The focus here is in particular on actions and campaigns against the trade in wild-caught parrots , songbirds and birds of prey, as well as preparations from wild animals. The bird conservationists pay particular attention to online trading at auction houses and virtual animal fairs, e.g. B. at www.ebay.de. To this end, the committee had documentation drawn up on the illegal trade in preparations and parts of protected animals, in which over 1,600 criminal offenses were listed and evaluated. The results as well as the public pressure led to the intensification of the observation and deletion of illegal and dubious offers at this auction house, so that such offers are only discovered sporadically today. In cooperation with the police and customs, numerous spectacular blows have been taken against the international pet trade.

history

In January 1975 the Committee against Bird Murder was founded in Berlin. The first campaigns were protests against bird hunting in Italy, bird trapping in Belgium and the wild bird trade in Germany. The first really practical measures - collecting illegal bird traps and safety nets - took place in 1979 in the German-Belgian border area near Aachen. Migratory bird protection camps have been held annually since 1985, first in northern Italy, then also in northern France, southern Italy, Cyprus and Malta. In 2006, around 300 volunteer nature and animal lovers from all over Europe took part in the migratory bird protection camps of the Committee against Bird Murder and its partner associations.

Economic situation

The association has around 11,000 donors and supporters - very few of them are members. The association is financed exclusively through donations and does not receive any significant amounts from companies or the public sector.
