Local elections in Saxony-Anhalt 2014
The local elections in Saxony-Anhalt took place on May 25, 2014. The turnout in the district elections was 43.1% and thus higher than in the district elections in 2009 with 36.9%. In the municipal council elections it was only 38%. The representation for district assemblies and local councils was elected.
Suffrage
All citizens over 16 were eligible to vote who had lived in the district or the municipality for at least three months.
Starting position
District elections
In the district council elections 2007/2009, the CDU achieved 32.2%, making it the strongest party. It was followed by the SPD with 20.5%, the Left with 20.3% and the free voters with 11.9%. The FDP achieved a result of 8.5%, followed by the Greens with 4.3%. The weakest force was the NPD with 2.2%.
Municipal council elections
In the municipal council elections, the CDU was 32.3% and was thus the strongest force. It was followed by the SPD with 20.7% and the Left with 18.4%. The Greens landed at 4.6% and the FDP at 8.3%. The Free Voters got 9% of the vote. Other parties like the NPD got 1.7%.
Result
District elections
The previous election winner, the CDU, was able to slightly improve its election result by 2.1% to 34.3%. The second strongest force was for the first time the left with 21.5% (+1.2%), followed by the SPD, which slipped to 18.3% (-2.3%) and thus only became the third strongest force. The free voters landed at 10.1%. The Greens achieved 5.5% (+1.2%) and are thus stronger than the FDP with 4.5% (-4%), which suffered heavy losses. The Greens achieved double-digit results in larger cities such as Magdeburg with 10.6% or Halle with 10%. The AfD, which ran for the first time, reached 2.4%. The NPD slipped from 2.2% to 1.6% and is thus again the weakest force.
Municipal council elections
The results of the municipal council elections were similar to those of the district council elections. The CDU was the strongest force with 34.3%, the left was the second strongest with 21.4%, followed by the SPD with 18.3%. The Free Voters achieved 9.9% and the Greens 5.6%. The weakest forces were the FDP with only 4.4%, the AfD with 2.4% and the NPD with 1.7%.
Election fraud in Stendal
In Stendal there were several cases of election fraud in the city council elections . A former city council had forged powers of attorney to collect postal voting documents and filled them out at his gusto. The election to the city council was then repeated, the forger was sentenced to a prison term of 2 years and 6 months.
