Communication barrier (psychology)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A communication barrier ( Engl. Communication roadblock) is by Thomas Gordon , a type of communication that expresses the desire or intention not to accept the communication partner, but to change it. John Gottman described similar behaviors as the four apocalyptic horsemen of the couple relationship (→  John Gottman ).

Gordon names twelve types of communication barriers:

  1. Commanding, arranging, prompting
  2. Warn, warn, threaten
  3. Moralize, preach, conjure up
  4. Advising, making suggestions, delivering solutions
  5. Judging, criticizing, contradicting, reproaching, accusing
  6. Teaching, justifying by logic
  7. Praise, agree, flatter - can signal high expectations.
  8. Shame, abuse, ridicule
  9. Interpret, analyze, diagnose
  10. Calm down, express sympathy, comfort, straighten up
  11. Investigating, asking, interrogating - questions can convey the feeling of a lack of trust and the impression of being threatened if it is not clear what the question is for. Accordingly, Ruth Cohn proposed an auxiliary rule in TZI: “When you ask a question, say why you are asking and what your question means for you. Testify yourself and avoid the interview ”.
  12. Distract, evade, tease

In his book Parent Effectiveness Training (PRT), published in 1970, Gordon named these twelve elements in connection with the Gordon Model as conversation elements that harbor a particular risk of negatively affecting a conversation, especially when the conversation is under stress takes place.

According to Gordon, these twelve communication barriers create a destructive conversation situation and can put the interlocutor on the defensive or cause him to remain silent. In contrast, active listening helps the interlocutor to solve his problem himself.

A component of the training according to Gordon therefore forms the recognition and avoidance of communication blocks. According to Gordon, communication barriers should be avoided when the other person has a problem. In the problem-free zone, the probability that the communication is disrupted by the use of communication blocks is rather low. In this respect, it can be discussed whether there are situations in which the use of a communication block such as threats is permitted, for example if your own life is in danger.
