Thomas Gordon (born March 11, 1918 , † August 26, 2002 ) was a practicing psychologist in the United States . He received his PhD from the University of Chicago , where he also taught. Through his experience working with children and young people, he recognized the great importance of communication and non-violent conflict resolution for interpersonal relationships .

Based on scientific foundations and the humanistic psychology of Carl Rogers , he developed a concrete model that can be used in everyday life, which is also known as the Gordon model . Thomas Gordon is one of the pioneers of humanistic psychology and was convinced that people who grow up in a caring and liberal climate are to a great extent able to take on responsibility and lead a self-determined, fulfilled life.

He is the author of several books on communication, parenting, and relationships. His most famous book Family Conference has sold millions of copies worldwide. In order to make it easier for interested people to use his methods, he developed various specific training courses for parents, educators, managers, etc. as early as the 1960s. Thomas Gordon has received several awards for his work. The aim of his method, the improvement of relationships and the non-violent resolution of conflicts without losers, is also peace work in the true sense.

  • He served as a White House advisor to the conference on children.
  • He was also a member of the National Society for Peace and a member of the Peace Psychology Division of the American Psychological Association.
  • He was nominated three times for the Nobel Peace Prize: 1997, 1998 and 1999.
