Communist Party of Iceland (Marxist-Leninists)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Communist Party of Iceland (Marxists-Leninists) ( Icelandic Kommúnistaflokkur Íslands (marxistarnir-lenínistarnir) ) was a Maoist organization that existed in Iceland from 1976 to 1980 . A forerunner organization with the central organ Stéttabaráttan existed as early as 1972.

Maoism in Iceland

Icelandic students came into contact with Maoist ideas in the early 1970s while studying in other Scandinavian countries (Norway and Sweden). The first Maoist organization in Iceland was founded in 1972 under the name Kommúnistahreyfingin ML (KHML), which published a central organ Stéttabaráttan (class struggle). After a short time (August 1972) the organization was renamed Kommunistasamtökin marxistarnir-léninistarnir (KSML). The aim of the KSML was to build an "anti-revisionist" Communist Party, guided by the teachings of Marx , Engels , Lenin , Stalin and Mao Zedong . In April 1976, 30 delegates founded the Íslands Kommúnistaflokkur (marxistarnir-lenínistarnir) (KFÍ-ml).

From 1975 KSML, later KFÍ-ml , with Einingarsamtök kommúnista (ml) (EIK (ml)) got a competing organization. Both parties had contacts with the Chinese Communist Party and were occasionally mentioned together in the Peking Rundschau in 1976 . Later the Peking Rundschau only printed the statements from EIK (ml).

Because of the dwindling influence of the Maoist movement in Iceland after Mao's death, the two organizations merged in 1980 to form Kommúnistasamtökin (KS), which was dissolved in 1985.
