Communist Party of Nigeria

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Communist Party of Nigeria (CPN) is a communist party in Nigeria .

It was founded in Kano in November 1960 , mostly by cadres of the Nigerian Youth Congress . Initially, the party was politically inspired by the British Communist Party . However, its party constitution was based on the constitution of the Communist Party of China from 1945.

However, the party remained relatively isolated from international relations between the Soviet Union and China, and had no close ties to either the Soviet Union Communist Party or the Chinese CCP for reasons of neutrality . When the Nigerian Socialist Workers and Peasants Party was formed in 1963, the CPN denounced its creation as "the latest attempt in a long line of opportunistic and selfish acts that have done much to affect the socialist movement in Nigeria."

The Nigerian Communist Party was banned in 1966 by Decree 34 of the regime of General Johnson Aguiyi-Ironsi . However, it was re-established in 2002 after the end of military rule.
