A commun wall (from the Latin communis = common) is a wall that is divided by at least two buildings . In urban areas, especially in the inner cities, communal wall construction was common practice for a long time due to the lack of space. A typical case of a communal wall is the building partition between row houses or semi-detached houses .

In a building project, the communal wall is a critical area, especially with regard to statics , sound and heat insulation . Particularly with regard to sound insulation, building partition walls are now increasingly being built with two layers, i.e. two walls erected in parallel.

Within a building, the wall between two independent residential units is also known as the communal wall.
