Komoot ( pronunciation [kɔˈmoːt]) is a route planner and navigation app that is specially designed for hiking and cycling . The company was founded in 2010 by six people from Germany and Austria. It is based in Potsdam and has around 50 employees (as of 2019).

The name Komoot is derived from the German word kommod , as the app should be practical and simple. The pronunciation is reminiscent of the English word for " pendeln " and "Pendler", to commute or commuter .

The Komoot software allows you to plan tours in advance on your PC or smartphone . You can choose in which way the tour is to be mastered: mountain tour, hiking, running, bicycle, racing bike, mountain bike, gravel bike or MTB enduro . In the case of the variants with the bike, you can also set whether the tours take place with the e-bike . With the stored map material, Komoot suggests a route, which can also be specifically adapted in the paid version. The software generates next to a route and a height profile, the selected parameters predicted according to the duration of the tour and provides the data in GPX format for further use for GPS -assisted navigation devices available. In addition, the Komoot app for smartphones has voice navigation.

The basic functions of Komoot are free, as are the maps for the first region; Other regions and extended functions, such as the planning of multi-day tours or sports-specific maps, are subject to a charge. In addition to its own planning of tours, Komoot also displays the published tours of other users in a database, who can attach pictures as well as a route description. In addition to the route planning and navigation function, the operator also offers the platform for an online community on which routes and special places (“highlights”) can be shared, rated and commented on.

In addition to the editions in German and English, Komoot has also been available in Dutch since 2020.
