Komos (beach)
Komos ( Greek Κόμος ) is an approx. 4 km long sandy beach on the south coast of Crete , approx. 3.5 km or half an hour's walk from the village of Pitsidia . Due to the north-south orientation of the beach, when the westerly winds prevail, there are more waves than on most of the other east-west beaches on the Cretan south coast.
Due to the presumed further antiquities in the area of the partly exposed Minoan port of Kommos , the beach of Komos may not be built on. It is located in an archaeological protection zone A supervised by Athens. This explains that, despite the proximity to Matala with its small bay, there are only a few taverns on Komos beach. The loggerhead turtles ( Caretta caretta ), which are threatened in the population and use Komos as an egg-laying place, also benefit from the construction ban.
