Compartmentalization hypothesis

The compartmentalization hypothesis states that small DNA rings, called plasmids , were separated from the cytoplasm by membrane invaginations . In the case of the mitochondria, respiratory enzymes, and in the case of the plastids, photosynthetic enzymes, which were contained in the membrane, were included. This process took place gradually as the cell became more compartmentalized.

In contrast to this is the endosymbiotic theory , which provides the generally scientifically recognized explanation for the formation of mitochondria and plastids today .
