Kompoloi ( ancient Greek Κομπολόι , modern Greek pronunciation Komboloi [ kɔ (m) bɔlɔi ]) v is an antique winery from the 4th century. In the plain of Leibethra . Archaeological excavation work began there in 1997 and lasted (with interruptions) until October 2000.

location

The excavation site is around 500 meters east of the A1 (E 75) national road and 700 meters west of the Skotina coastline.

The attachment

The building was from the middle of the 4th century BC. Until the beginning of the 3rd century BC. Used; it was destroyed by fire and abandoned by its residents. It was built on an already existing vineyard. Two buildings, a house and a farmhouse, stood in a central courtyard; there were other buildings in the north and south. The buildings had 17 rooms. A cellar was uncovered in the east, the foundations of which presumably supported a tower. Next to the southern entrance was a well and a stove.

The finds

Clay vessels in which the wine was stored were buried in the earth. A total of 32 of these vessels were found. They were of considerable size. The height was 2.15 meters, the diameter 1.60 meters, the material was three to four centimeters thick. The capacity was almost 2000 liters. One of these containers called pithoi (Πίθουι) is exhibited in the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki . Lead clips were also found for repairing the vessels, clay lids, grape seeds and resin.

Viticulture

Archaeobotanical research showed that as early as the 4th millennium BC BC wine was cultivated in the Middle East. A little later, wine was grown in Thrace and from there reached Olympus . The harvest began at the end of August. The grapes were pressed and the must was poured into the pithoi. The containers were opened and the contents checked at least every 36 days. On the first day of Anthesteria , a festival in honor of the god Dionysus , the clay vessels were finally opened and the wine could be drunk.
