Komunistická strana Slovenska (1948)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 1948 established Komunistická strana Slovenska (German: Communist Party of Slovakia ), abbreviated KSS, was until 1992 the Slovak "regional organization" of the Czechoslovak Communist Party (KSČ) in Slovakia and thus the supporting pillar of the communist regime in the country.

Background of the creation

The KSS, created in 1948, replaced the independent Communist Party of Slovakia, which was founded in 1939 after the establishment of the first Slovak state . It formed the Slovak part ("regional organization") of the all-Czechoslovak communist KSČ , without there being a corresponding sub-organization for Bohemia and Moravia.

Tasks and structure

The task of the KSS was to implement the directives and policies that came from the KSČ. The highest body of the party was the KSS party congress. Well-known functionaries of the party include the first secretaries Alexander Dubček (1963–1968) and Jozef Lenárt (1970–1988). The central periodical was the daily Pravda (truth).

To rename it came on 1 December 1990, when the party "Communist Party of Slovakia - Strana demokratickej Lavice" ( Communist Party of Slovakia - Party of the Democratic Left ) meant to February 1, 1992 then only "Strana demokratickej Lavice" ( Party of democratic left ), abbreviated SDĽ.
