Conditioning screw
Screw conveyors are used to transport bulk materials used in the Konditionierschnecke or conditioning screw is malt transported. Water is sprayed in while the malt is being transported to the grist mill . Due to the rotating movement of the screw, the water is applied homogeneously to the husk (grain coating). The application of water to the husk increases its elasticity and is retained during the subsequent crushing of the malt, the mechanical breaking up of the malt grain by crushing it between grinding rollers. This serves to support the subsequent lautering process, in which the wort is separated from the spent grain . During this process, the husk acts as a natural filter. The better the husk is preserved, the more efficiently it can be lautered, especially with regard to the clarity of the wort (opalescence) and for reasons of time (faster wort drainage). In addition, the beer is positively influenced in terms of taste, as the husk contains unpleasantly bitter tannins, which are then dissolved in the wort in lower concentrations.
