Conditioning (HSZT)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In oncology / hematology, conditioning refers to the preparatory phase for a hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT). The patient is exposed to high-dose chemotherapy combined with partial or whole-body radiation, the aim of which is to destroy the patient's diseased haematopoietic (blood-forming) system.

HSZT is most commonly used as a therapy for forms of leukemia and in most of these patients makes a decisive contribution to their chances of survival. However, in individual cases, the development of SMN (secondary malignant neoplasia ) occurs as a side effect , which is why in recent years children and adolescents have often not received full-body radiation before HSCT.
