On December 29, the US Air Force launched air strikes against the Shiite Kataib Hezbollah militia in Iraq and Syria, killing four fighters.

On December 31, 2019, attacks on the US embassy in Baghdad took place in response to the air strikes.

Killing of the Iranian general Qasem Soleimani

On the night of January 3, 2020, Iranian Major General Qasem Soleimani was killed by a drone attack. The attack was based on the direct order of US President Trump. Iran announced "harsh retaliation".

After a subsequent Iranian attack on US troops in Iraq, the United Nations called for de-escalation; a Gulf War must be prevented.
