The Bab-Gedid Mosque (from the Ottoman Bab-ı Cedid today Yenikapı Camii so mosque on New Gate also: Eski Mosque within the meaning of old mosque ) was a prayer house in the town of Kos on the Greek island of Kos . It was largely destroyed in an earthquake in 1933 . Only the northwest minaret of the mosque remains today .

location

The Bab Gedid mosque was located on the hill of the citadel of Seraglios, at today's Diagora Square, at the other end of the densely built-up former Muslim quarter near today's old town . The preserved minaret stands at about 13  m above sea level. It is around 400 meters from the Mandraki Port in Kos Town.

history

The Bab Gedid Mosque was built in 1586 (year 995 according to the Islamic calendar ). The house of prayer was one of the oldest mosques in Kos. On the east side of the mosque there was a fountain for washing before prayer and a small cemetery outside. The mosque was largely destroyed in the 1933 earthquake. Around 1935, with the exception of the minaret, which is still visible today, the remains were torn down in order to implement the new urban development plan of the Italian occupying forces. The 11.35 m high minaret - previously with access from the inside of the mosque - is octagonal and was built on the northwest side of the former mosque.

The former well on the north side of the minaret bears an inscription with information about the construction of the mosque, the builders / donors (Hajji Mustafa Aga and his wife Fatima) and a motto: “My fellow human being, since everything lives thanks to the water, why do you believe not about it? ”This is supposed to be taken symbolically from the Koran.
