The tropical greenhouse Itabashi (板橋 区 立 熱 帯 環境 植物 館, Itabashi kuritsu nettai kankyō shokubutsukan), Japanese for short Nettaikan (熱 帯 館), is a publicly accessible facility in the Itabashi district of Tōkyō, which is managed by the Facility Management of the Seibu Group, which also manages a number of urban parks.

Overview

The tropical greenhouse shows the tropical rainforest over two vertically connected floors, mainly with a humid tropical climate, which also includes the altitude of the tropical zone in a correspondingly cooled area. There is also a small aquarium so that you can get information about the tropics from the sea to the high mountains . The building has a total area of 3000 m². The waste heat from the Itabashi waste incineration plant is used for the heat required, with the building designed for low energy consumption. The house opened in September 1994.

Layout
  • The ground floor (1 in the plan) is mostly under tropical climate. A small body of water is surrounded by mangroves and the low nipa palms . The greater part behind it is taken up by the area for lower tropical wood. There are a total of 2000 plants of 700 different species. There is also a room for publications and a small café. The administration rooms are also located on the ground floor.
  • The upper floor uses the entire area (1) for the tropical area and also provides a view of part of the ground floor. Surrounded by nipa palms is a grass-covered Malay house where you can see seeds and fruits from all over the world. The hall can be crossed over a bridge. Here is a separate, non-tropical area for plants of high altitude (2), which extends over it in the north. There you can see Hymenanthes (a subspecies of the rhododendrons ), orchids and a type of carnivorous plant, the Nepenthes rafflesiana . A long room (3) is built in front of the hall on the upper floor on stilts, which offers space for the permanent exhibition and for special exhibitions. The permanent exhibition shows the tropical rainforest along with information about its threat. Insects from Southeast Asia are also shown in showcases.
  • In the basement there is a small aquarium and other cellar rooms. Fish from Southeast Asia are kept in the aquarium, namely from the sea, brackish and fresh water. A total of 2500 fish of 150 species can be seen.
