Confucius as a reformer (short for: Chinese  孔子 改制 考 , Pinyin Kǒngzǐ gǎizhì kǎo , W.-G. Kung-tzu kai-chih k'ao  - "Study / investigation into Confucius as a reformer") is a work published in 1898 by the Chinese philosopher and reformer Kang Youwei (1858-1927). It comprises a total of twenty-one juan .

The writing explains Kang's view that Confucius was deeply concerned with the problems of his time and with reforms when he codified or wrote the Six Classics ( 六 經  /  六 经 , liùjīng ). Change in things, Kang claimed, was one of the main rules that regulated the universe and society. Since Confucius was a reformer, the reform of today's institutions or ideas conforms to the true teachings of Confucius. Apparently, Confucius is evoked by Kang Youwei to advance his own reform goals.

The Confucian scholar Zhu Yixin (1846-1894), for example, accused Kang Youwei of "misusing the name of the sage for a misguided plan to overload China with foreign ideas".

Representatives of the conservative gentry demanded the destruction of the printing plates of his writing.

Kang Youwei's introduction to his writing is contained in the magazine Buren ( 不忍 , Bùrěn ), No. 1 (1913). She was u. a. used by Feng Youlan in the chapter "The New Text School in the Qing Dynasty " of his history of Chinese philosophy .
