New text school

The New Text School ( Chinese  今文 經 學  /  今文 经 学 , Pinyin Jīnwén jīngxué , W.-G. Chin-wen ching-hsüeh ) is one of the two main schools in the study of the Confucian classics in Chinese philosophy . In the year 213 BC, according to the tradition of Shiji , the First Emperor of Qin is said to have ordered the burning of all Confucian classics. The early Han Confucian scholars undertook the great task of restoring the ancient classics. Most of the lost works were written down according to the narratives and accounts of some masters of the classical scripts. These classics were later called the New Script Classics ( 今文 , jīnwén ) because they were written in the Chancellery script, a predominant style of calligraphy during the Han Dynasty . Later, in the 2nd century BC, Emperor Wu of Han (ruled 141-87 B.C.E. ) was induced by the philosopher Dong Zhongshu (179-104 B.C.E.) to promote Confucianism as an official ideology as a move in the direction of strengthening the unity of the country, as well as the main curricula in educational institutions of different levels. Since then the school has grown quite prosperous. Another major representative of this school was He Xiu ( 何 休 ; 129–182), who wrote explanations of Gongyang's commentary on the spring and autumn annals ( Gongyang zhuan ). To meet the needs of politics, scholars of the time sought to elaborate the sublime words of the classics to support their theory of the great unification of the empire. After the middle period of the Western Han Dynasty , the decline of this school began with the gradual rise of the Old Text School ( Guwen jingxue ), and it was not resurrected until the middle period of the Qing Dynasty .
