Pi Xirui ( Chinese  皮錫瑞  /  皮锡瑞 , Pinyin Pí Xīruì , W.-G. P'i Hsi-jui ; 1850–1908), zi : Lumen ( 鹿門 , Lùmén ), zi : Liyun ( 麓 雲 , Lùyún ) was a Chinese Confucian scholar of the late Qing Dynasty .

life and work

Pi came from Shanhua 善化 (today's Changsha in Hunan Province ). After failing the capital city examination, he began his career as a teacher and classical scholar at Longtan Academy 龙潭 书院 in Guiyang, Hunan Province, then at Jingxun Academy 经 训 书院 in Nanchang南昌, Jiangxi Province . In the reform years he stood at the side of the reformers and advocated educational reform. He was charged with radical tendencies. As a classical philologist, he was associated with the New Text School of Classics. According to him, it was Master Kong (Confucius) who wrote the Book of Changes and the Book of Rites , and who rewrote other classical scriptures. His writings include a general overview of the Five Classics ( Wujing tonglun ), a history of the study of the classical works of Confucianism ( Jingxue lishi ), and a text-critical examination of the newly written book of history ( Jinwen Shangshu kaozheng ).

Because of his special admiration for Fu Sheng's (2nd century BC) "Shangshu" 尚書 [= Shujing] from the early years of the Western Han Dynasty (the founder of the tradition of commenting on Shujing based on the "New Text School" ( see Confucian New Text School / Neutext-Shangshu )), he called his book collection "Shi Fu tang" 師 伏 堂, and his contemporaries called him "Mr. Shi Fu" 師 伏 先生 ("A teacher who takes an example from Fu [Sheng] takes ").

For the Hanyu da zidian ( HYDZD ), for example, his writings Xiaojing Zhengzhu shu孝经 郑 注疏 (for Xiaojing孝经) and Shangshu dazhuan shuzheng 尚书 大 传 疏 证 (for Shangshu dazhuan 尚书 大 传 ), both from his Shifutang congshu collection 师 伏 堂 丛书.
