He Xiu (Han Dynasty)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

He Xiu ( 何 休 , Hé Xiū , Ho Hsiu ; born 129 ; died 182 ) was a Chinese philosopher and philologist during the Later Han Dynasty . He was a famous exponent of the new text school ( Jinwen jingxue ). He rose to become the emperor's chief adviser. He is the author of statements on Gongyang's Commentary on the Spring and Autumn Annals ( Gongyang zhuan ), entitled Chunqiu Gongyang jiegu春秋 公羊 解 詁, which was part of the Hou Hanshu . Many of his works have been lost or only partially preserved. He was influenced by Dong Zhongshu (ca. 179-104 B.C.E.). His theory of the Three Ages ( 三世 說  /  三世 说 , Sānshìshuō ), had a decisive influence on the development of the utopian theory of Kang Youwei (1858–1927). According to He Xius' theory, Confucius tried to bring the whole world to peace and order by working out of its own situation and moving the "age of decay and disorder" into the age of "approaching peace" and finally into the " Age of Universal Peace ”.
