Rafe de Crespigny
Richard Rafe Champion de Crespigny (born March 16, 1936 in Adelaide ) is an Australian sinologist . He is Emeritus Associate Professor at the Center for China and Korea at the Australian National University in Canberra . He earned his most important merits in the history, geography and literature of the Han Dynasty and through pioneering work in the editing and translation of the sources at the time of the Three Kingdoms .
Career
De Crespigny studied history at Cambridge University and earned his BA in 1957, an MA in 1961. At the Australian National University, he received a BA in Sinology in 1962, an MA in Oriental Studies in 1964 and a Ph.D. (Doctor) of Far Eastern History. With suggestions from Hans Bielenstein , Patrick Fitzgerald , Hsü Cho-yün and Miyazaki Ichisada and by reading the story of the Three Kingdoms , a classic novel, he came to the Three Kingdoms of China. His 1964 dissertation entitled The Development of the Chinese Empire in the South; A discussion of the origins of the state of Wu of the Three Kingdoms (German "The development of the Chinese Empire in the South, a discussion of the origins of the Wu State of the Three Kingdoms") laid the foundation for his later work, which included in the monograph Generals of the South (1990).
Publications
In addition to works on contemporary Chinese history, China: The Land and its People (Melbourne 1971); China This Century (Melbourne 1975, reprinted Hong Kong 1992) is de Crespigny's most commendable work of the politics of the Han Dynasty. In addition to a work Northern Frontier: The Policies and Strategy of the Later Han Empire (Canberra 1984) , he published a first (incomplete) translation of Sima Guang's history work Zizhi Tongjian : To Establish Peace (Canberra 1996) in 1996.
His work Generals of the South is groundbreaking , in which he explains the rise of the Sun family and the tripartite division of China in the 3rd century. It also forms the starting point for a discussion of the Southern Dynasties of the 5th century and points to the origins of the different development of North and South China.
A standard work on the history of the Han Dynasty and the Three Kingdoms is his extensive work A biographical dictionary of Later Han to the Three Kingdoms , which appeared in Section 4 (China) of the Handbuch der Orientalistik in 2007 .
In 2010 a comprehensive scientific biography about the warlord Cao Cao was published under the title Imperial Warlord. A Biography of Cao Cao 155–220 AD , 2016 a history of the late Han period ( Fire over Luoyang ). Both plants were rated very positively in specialist discussions.
