Hans Bielenstein

Hans Bielenstein (born April 8, 1920 in Hildesheim , † March 8, 2015 in New York City ) was an American sinologist of Swedish origin.

Life

Hans Bielenstein, the son of pastor Maximilian Bielenstein, studied history and oriental studies at Stockholm University . His academic mentor was the sinologist Bernhard Karlgren . Bielenstein achieved a master's degree in 1945 and a licentiate in 1947. In 1952 he went as a professor at Canberra University College , where he founded the School of Oriental Studies in 1953 . Bielenstein was the first representative of Sinology at an Australian university.

In 1961 he moved to Columbia University in New York , where he headed the Department of East Asian Languages ​​and Cultures from 1969 . In 1988 he retired as Dean Lung Professor of Chinese .

Bielenstein's research focus was Chinese history. He dealt with the economic, trade, military and administrative history of the early Chinese Empire . He was particularly interested in the epochs from the Han Dynasty to the Song Dynasty .
