Konrad-Martin-Kreuz on the Hülfensberg

The Konrad-Martin-Kreuz is a steel cross on the Hülfensberg near Geismar in the Eichsfeld district in Thuringia .

history

Construction began in May 1933, on August 7, 1933 the cross was consecrated in memory of Bishop Konrad Martin . Konrad Martin was born in Geismar at the foot of the Hülfensberg and brought the Franciscans to the pilgrimage mountain . The cross consists of a 4500 kg steel structure, is 18.6 meters high and stands on a base. On the north side there are light bulbs that illuminate the cross at night. Those responsible for the GDR wanted the lights to be switched off, because the illuminated cross could be an orientation for possible refugees from the GDR in the near border area at night . In 1991 the cross was extensively restored. From the location of the cross on the northern Hülfensberg plateau one has a wide view of the southern Eichsfeld .
