The parish church of Wolfern is in the market town of Wolfern in Upper Austria . The Roman Catholic parish church of St. Martin belongs to the Deanery of Steyr in the Diocese of Linz . The church is a listed building .

history

The exact start of construction of the Martinskirche has not been handed down, but the "Wolfarer Pharr" was first mentioned in a document as early as 1318. This time was marked by fighting between the Catholics and the Waldensians . In the course of this unrest, the rectory was set on fire twice (1396 and 1397). After the waves had smoothed out, the parish church was built on a large scale. The beautiful gothic main portal bears the date 1523. At this time the construction - apart from smaller extensions - was completed.

The church originally had a wooden tower that was demolished in 1833 and a sacristy was built in its place in 1834. The current tower made of Kremsmünster conglomerate stone was built in just six months. In 1880 a new sacristy was finally added. In 1891 two new side altars in neo-Gothic style were added. In 1910 the church was completely renovated. The old baroque altar from 1630 was removed and the neo-Gothic high altar, which is still in the church today, has been installed. A neo-Gothic pulpit was also installed and the floor was renewed. In 1929 the church was illuminated electrically for the first time. In 1953 the interior of the church was renovated and in 1954 the gilded tower cross was added. In 1980/81 the last major renovation of the church took place.

architecture

The late Gothic church building consists of ashlar masonry. The two-bay rib vaulted choir has a three-eighth end and has two small hangers in the vault of the end of the choir. The year 1434 above the current high altar indicates the construction time of this part with the graceful, Gothic reticulated vault. The two-aisled three-bay nave has a cross vault on pillars. The late Gothic south portal died and was designated 1523. The keel-arched vestry portal has a door with Gothic fittings. The west tower wears an onion helmet.

Furnishing

Nothing remains of the original interior of the church. It was most likely destroyed in the religious turmoil and the peasant wars. The paintings on the walls of the nave, which date from the 16th century, are remarkable. The tablets with Latin and German sayings, the 12 Gothic crosses of the Apostles, which enclose the chancel like a ring, and the paintings on the two axial pillars were uncovered and restored on the occasion of the church renovation in 1980/81.

A bell was cast in 1792.

graveyard

Originally the cemetery was around the church. In 1817 a new cemetery was created about 200 m from the church.
