Konrad Menet

Konrad Menet (born October 29, 1836 in Gais AR ; † December 27, 1916 in St. Gallen ) was a Swiss businessman. After a commercial apprenticeship at Bartholome Tanner's company in St. Gallen, he emigrated to South America in 1859 to work as a businessman, first in Buenos Aires, then in Montevideo . There he founded the textile trading company Menet & Cie. and married Johanna Zürcher geb. Tanner, the daughter of his former boss. Because of this marriage, his last name is also given as Menet-Tanner. He returned to Switzerland as a representative of his company in 1880, after playing an important role as consul in Uruguay for the Swiss colony Nueva Helvecia from 1870 to 1880 . He had the Villa Wiesental built in St Gallen, where he served as district judge from 1884 to 1898 . From 1899 to 1912 he was President of the St.Galler Kantonalbank .
