Konrad von Stoffel

Master Konrad von Stoffel (also von Stoffeln , von Stofelen , own name of stoffel maister cunrat ) is a German poet of the 13th century.

His only known work, Gauriel von Muntabel or the knight with the goat , is a courtly verse novel about a subject from Arthurian epic in the vicinity of the wine shop , of which the author states that he acquired his model in Spain ("Zuo hispania ere daz puoch won "). It has survived in two late manuscripts, of which the first, preserved in the Fürstenbergische Bibliothek zu Donaueschingen (today Badische Landesbibliothek , Hs. Don. 86), contains a more extensive version with 5642 verses and dates from the 15th century, while the second , today in the University and State Library of Tyrol , is dated to the year 1456 and contains a shorter version, probably created through cuts and omissions.

The references in the text to the author and origin of the material can only be found in the Donaueschingen manuscript. Konrad describes himself there on the one hand as "maister" and on the other hand as "werder fryer man". In older research he was sometimes identified with a Strasbourg canon documented in 1282–1284.
