The Music School Conservatory Bern is a conservatory in the Swiss capital Bern . It is housed in a listed building at 36 Kramgasse .

history

The music school was founded in 1858 by the Bernische Musikgesellschaft (BMG) as one of the first Swiss music schools. From 1892, the training of musicians was supplemented by professional musical training. The school was therefore renamed in 1927 as “Conservatory for Music in Bern”, and after the addition of a drama school it was renamed “Conservatory for Music + Theater in Bern”.

The house facade of the conservatory facing Kramgasse was decorated in 1940 with the sandstone relief Musica with harp , also known as the floating one . This facade sculpture was created by Jakob Probst (1880–1966).

As a result of the cantonal decree of November 24, 1983 on music schools and conservatories, the school was transferred to a foundation independent of the BMG . In 2000 this was merged with the “Conservatory Building Foundation”, which had existed since 1938, to form the “Bern Conservatory Music School” foundation.

offer

The conservatory offers individual instrumental and singing lessons for children and adults and provides the opportunity to participate in ensembles . It organizes regular music events and operates a youth symphony orchestra.

The conservatory is financed by contributions from the canton and the city of Bern as well as school fees. A “Scholarship Foundation for the Music School Conservatory Bern” awards scholarships .
