The Austrian Consular Law (abbreviated KonsG ) came into force on May 23, 2019 and regulates the assistance of the representative and consular authorities of the Republic of Austria to Austrian and other citizens of an EU member state in third countries.

For the first time, this law standardizes consular protection in a separate law. It was decided on April 24, 2019 with the votes of the ÖVP and FPÖ in the National Council. The background to this was that after a discussion held at the beginning of 2019 about possible Austrian citizens returning from the Middle East and belonging to the Islamic State terrorist militia, the opportunity should be created to exclude them from consular care.
