A convoy commodore is the leader of a convoy of merchant ships . He stands in the NATO usually the leader of the convoy protected Marine Unit, the Officer in Tactical Command (OTC). Its job is to coordinate the convoy's formation and movements while the OTC commands the escorting warships .

Naval officers or specially trained nautical officers are deployed as convoy commodors , if necessary the captain of one of the ships in the convoy.

Convoy commodors were responsible for keeping merchant ships in order in British convoys during World War II. Usually the convoy commodore was a retired naval officer or senior merchant captain from the Royal Naval Reserve . He was on board one of the merchant ships in the convoy. The convoy commodore was distinguished from the commander of the convoy escort, who was always an active naval officer.
