Council of Clermont (535)

The Council of Clermont met on November 8th, 535 in what is now Clermont-Ferrand . Honoratus von Bourges presided .

Attendees

Fifteen bishops were present, among them Flavius ​​of Reims, Nicetius of Trier, Domitian of Maastricht , Hesperius of Metz, Desiderature of Verdun and Grammarus of Vindonissa.

decisions

Among other things, it was decided:

  • The bishops are forbidden to make private or secular matters the subject of the council's deliberations until subjects which require discipline have been dealt with.
  • Clerics are prohibited from addressing lay people in their disputes with bishops.
  • Those bishops who seek the favor of princes in order to gain bishopric or who cause forged election documents to be signed are excommunicated.

The council spoke out strongly against marriages between Christians and Jews, marriages between relatives, and the misconduct of clergy.
