Kookaburra Sits in the Old Gum Tree

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Kookaburra Sits in the Old Gum Tree (also: Kookaburra-Song ) is the most popular children's song in Australia . The text alludes to a species of bird known in Australia, the Kookaburra ( Jägerliest , also "Laughing Hans"), which sounds as if it was laughing because of its peculiar call.

Kookaburra

Australian children learn this canon in kindergartens and elementary schools.

Text and music were composed in the early 1930s by the Australian music teacher Marion Sinclair (October 9, 1896 - February 15, 1988). Sinclair released the song in 1934 as a contribution to a competition of Victoria - Girl Guides . The canon was first performed in 1934 as part of a major jamboree of the Girl Scouts near Melbourne ; in the 20th century the song became popular worldwide.

An Australian court ruled on July 30, 2009 that the flute melody in the song Down Under by the Australian band Men at Work was a plagiarism of Kookaburra Sits in the Old Gum Tree and thus found the plaintiff and owner of the copyright , the Australian music publisher Larrikin, right .
