Coupling table

A coupling table (also a plotting table ) is an aid for navigating ships. In its basic form it is a chart table on which the coupled course is transferred to nautical charts with the help of protractors and rulers.

In 1911, the first automatic coupling table from Anschütz & Co came onto the market, which automatically transferred the information from a gyro compass and the speedometer system to a map. The information for the coupling table has been supplemented over time with radar and radio navigation data (see also ARPA system ) and thus more and more reliable.

In the present the coupling table has been largely replaced by GPS- assisted digital navigation aids, often in connection with inertial navigation systems. However, it is usually still available as a replacement system.
