Coptic Saint Mark Cathedral Azbakeya

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Coptic Orthodox Saint Mark's Cathedral in the Cairin district of Azbakeya was the seat of the Coptic Pope from 1800 to 1971 .

Because of the influential position of the Copt Ibrahim El-Gohary in the government and his great favor for the Muslim rulers, he was able to issue fatwas that allowed Copts to rebuild destroyed churches and monasteries . This was of particular concern because until then Copts were not allowed to build new churches or renovate old churches unless they received official government approval - which was very rarely given.

One of the first churches he built is the Coptic Orthodox St. Mark's Cathedral in Azbakeya in the Egyptian capital Cairo, which was completed by his brother and inaugurated in 1800 by Pope Mark VIII . From then on, the cathedral served as the seat of the Coptic Orthodox Pope of Alexandria until 1971 , previously this was the St. Mary's Church in Harat ar-Rum .

Ibrahim El-Gohary also donated many foundations for landlords and money for reconstruction and came up with 238 foundation funds, which is documented in the Coptic Orthodox Patriarchate.
