It was founded in 1966 as an ethics committee. In 1999 the name was changed to the current name. Until the Game Rating Board was established in 2006, the KMRB also reviewed video games .
The headquarters of the KMRB is in Busan .
Age ratings
The levels of age ratings for movies are:
label | Text on the label | Labelling |
---|---|---|
전체 관람가 | Without age restriction | |
12 세 관람가 | KMRB approved from 12 | |
15 세 관람가 | KMRB approved from 15 | |
청소년 관람 불가 | No youth approval | |
제한 상영가 | Limited demonstration |
For age ratings from 12 and from 15 , younger people can watch the film accompanied by their parents. Based on Article 9 of the South Korean Youth Protection Act, only adults may be admitted to films without a youth approval. In South Korea, you come of age on January 1st of the year you turn 19.
Up until 2001 there was also the classification “reluctance” or “reservation”, which means that the evaluation of the film has been postponed indefinitely. This allowed the KMRB to delay film release. In 2001, however, the Constitutional Court ruled that such a delay violated freedom of speech.
