Korek Telecom Ltd. is the largest telecommunications company in the Kurdistan Autonomous Region .

history

The company Korek Telecom was founded in 2000 by Sirwan Barzanî, the nephew of Masud Barzani . Sirwan Barzanî was the managing director of Korek until 2009 and is currently the chairman of the company's board of directors . Therefore, according to the assumptions of the Financial Times , there is a connection to the Democratic Party of Kurdistan and the associated corruption. The managing director, Ghada Gebara, however, rejected these allegations. At the auction of cell phone licenses for Iraq in 2007, Korek Telecom bought one of these GSM licenses for 1.25 billion US dollars . The term for the licenses was 15 years.

In 2011, the largest French participated telecommunications provider Orange with an investment in the amount of 245 million US dollars (175 million euros ) to Korek Telecom.

Market position

The company had around 4.8 million customers in early 2013, most of them residing in Kurdistan. Korek has a 16% market share in the telecommunications industry, making it the third largest company in the country.
