The Kortum-Gesellschaft Bochum is an association for the research and maintenance of regional history in Bochum . The association, which is recognized as a non-profit organization, offers its members and interested parties various activities in the areas of urban and regional studies. The association uses the book from the Bochum coat of arms as an emblem with the approval of the city of Bochum.

history

The association was founded in 1921 and was called "Association for Local Lore". As a loosely structured association, they wanted to differentiate themselves from tightly organized associations. From 1921 to 1945 the Kortum Society had rooms in the "Haus Rechen" moated castle at the theater, which was then destroyed.

In 1990 the name was changed to “Kortum-Gesellschaft Bochum - Association for Local History, City History and Monument Protection”, after the probably most famous Bochum citizen, the doctor, scientist and writer Carl Arnold Kortum (1745-1824).

Since 1997 the company has owned a house in the city park, the former public lavatory at Bochum city park , at Bergstrasse 68a, which was built around 1924 in the style of brick expressionism. In 1997 the association was awarded the German Prize for Monument Protection by the German National Committee for Monument Protection .
