German National Committee for Monument Protection

The German National Committee for Monument Protection at the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media (DNK) was founded in 1973. Among other things, it has awarded the German Prize for Monument Protection since 1977 , the highest award in Germany in this area. The office of the committee was housed in the Federal Ministry of the Interior , since 1998 it has been part of the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media , based in Berlin (until 2016: Bonn ). The patron is the Federal President .

Bureau

The president of the committee is one of the state ministers who is a member of the Standing Conference of Education Ministers . The presidency usually changes every three years. Martina Münch , Minister for Science, Research and Culture of the State of Brandenburg , has been President of the Committee since March 2016 . Members of the Bundesrat and Bundestag , the state governments and the central municipal associations are appointed as vice-presidents .

Representatives from politics, business, churches, municipal umbrella organizations, the media and from associations and organizations dealing with monument protection and preservation belong to the committee as members.

task

The mandate of the National Committee is the Council of Europe's Monument Protection Charter of September 26, 1975. The recommendations drawn up for the European Monument Protection Year 1975 form the framework for the promotion of issues relating to the protection of monuments in all areas. This includes in particular

  • Awakening the idea of ​​monument protection in the population and promoting private initiatives
  • Promotion of the concept of conservation in urban development
  • Investigation of problems of monument protection and preservation
  • Examination of existing legal and administrative regulations with regard to their adaptation
  • Support and suggestion of monument-friendly laws and regulations

Monument Protection Prize

The annually awarded by the German National Committee for Monument Protection German price for preservation is divided into three categories: The Karl Friedrich Schinkel ring , created by Professor Hermann Jünger , Munich , and the Silver Hemisphere , the work of Professor Fritz Koenig , Landshut , be Awarded to people or groups of people who, through their initiative, have made an important contribution to the preservation and rescue of buildings, ensembles, old town centers, villages and archaeological monuments. The journalist prize , endowed with € 2,500, is given to representatives from the press, radio and television who have exemplified the problems of monument protection.
