Life

Karl Bernert was born in 1927 in Galicia, which at that time belonged to Poland , and came to his parents' homeland in northern Bohemia in 1939 , where he lived until the end of the war . In 1945 he came to Wiesa near Kamenz in Upper Lusatia . During the war, he began studying engineering in Liberec (Reichenberg). He was mason - master craftsmen (training in Kamenz and Bautzen), a civil engineer and architect (degree in Zittau) and vocational school teachers for construction trades in Dresden .

Karl Bernert had been a volunteer district monument curator since 1962. His activities included the inventory of the monuments of the Löbau district in 1970 and 1974, for which he also led student working groups and recorded around 1,800 objects, mainly half-timbered houses. He made contacts with people interested in folk architecture in neighboring countries, for which he expanded his knowledge of the Polish language and acquired the Czech language . Particularly on the subject of the half-timbered house, he led the collaboration with the construction department at the Zittau / Görlitz University of Applied Sciences .

Bernert wrote many publications on the protection of monuments and in particular on the folk building method of the half-timbered house, such as the book "half-timbered houses" from 1988 and the "picture dictionary of the framework construction of Upper Lusatia and the adjacent Czech and Polish regions" in German, Czech, Polish and Upper Sorbian , which he suggested and together with Eberhard Deutschmann, Helmut Jentsch-Jenč and other authors from the Saxon Association for Folk Architecture in 1995 in Dresden.
