The mill area is about 2.5 hectares. A building ensemble stands on it, surrounded by forest and ponds. The main building is a residential and commercial building from 1817, a three-storey thatched four-column house with a stable and living area. The three-storey mill building from 1893 as a clinker brick building with a half-timbered storey is attached to it . The water mill was originally fed by five fish ponds that were laid out in the Middle Ages . Today a 6 hectare spring pond supplies the water that flows off via the Karoxborsteler Mühlenbach to the Seevekanal . The mill has three grinding courses and an overshot water wheel . Another building is the sawmill , built in 1900 , which was powered by the water mill. There is also a bakery and a pigsty from the 1920s.

history

Residential and farm building from 1817

Historical tradition suggests that the Karoxbostel watermill was built between 1428 and 1438 by the noble von Heimbruch family. When the von Heimbruch with Karoxbostel was enfeoffed by the dukes Bernhard and Wilhelm of Braunschweig and Lüneburg in 1428, the mill is not yet mentioned. In 1438 it is mentioned for the first time in a legal transaction between the brothers Hinrik, Bertold and Ludolff von Heimbruch and the dean of the Verden St. Andrew's Church . The yard belonging to the mill has been occupied since 1366. In 1603, after the departure of those from Heimbruch to Rethem, the mill came under the rule of the Harburg dukes . The mill burned down in 1692, but was rebuilt in the same year. The originally undershot mill was converted into an overshot mill in 1739.

The mill was a compulsory mill for the dependent farmers in 14 surrounding villages until the abolition of the mill compulsory in 1869. This ensured the miller's prosperity , which explains the construction of the imposing main house in 1817. From 1783 the mill was operated by the Meyer-Denecke family. Since the yard property was not connected to the public electricity supply until the 1970s , the water mill was in operation to generate electricity until then .

The property, which has been in a “deep slumber” for decades, began to deteriorate more rapidly from around 2002 when rainwater penetrated through the building roofs. The elderly farm owner was overwhelmed with the maintenance and did not undertake any rescue measures on the buildings; in 2011 he died without an heir.

Restoration and use

The Wassermühle Karoxbostel Association was founded in 2012 to maintain the plant. The association with initially 88 members acquired the mill site in 2012. Today (2017) with around 1000 members it is the mill association with the largest number of members in Germany. Hundreds of association members were involved in the restoration of the heavily dilapidated building complex from 2013 to 2015. For this purpose, financial support came from various institutions and companies, from the state and also as donations. In 2015 it was 240,000 euros. In total, it should have been around 400,000 euros. In 2016, the Lower Saxony Sparkassenstiftung awarded the Association for the Restoration of the Monument Ensemble the State Prize for Monument Preservation. In 2017 the Karoxbostel watermill became an extracurricular learning location .

Since the Open Monument Day in 2014, the mill has been grinding grain again, which is baked into bread in a clay oven in the bakery. The sawmill has been in operation again since 2016. In 2017 the 200th anniversary of the residential and farm building from 1817 was celebrated.

In 2017, the association was awarded the Silver Hemisphere , the German Prize for Monument Protection, by the German National Committee for Monument Protection for its previous achievements in maintaining the Karoxbostel watermill .

A variety of events take place on the mill grounds throughout the year, including cultural events and Advent and Christmas markets . The German Mill Day and the Open Monument Day are celebrated annually . In the mill building there is a wedding room of the Seevetal registry office .
