education

Kreuch attended the Polytechnic High School in Wechmar from 1973 to 1983 and graduated with a very good grade . He then began a two-year apprenticeship as a vehicle fitter in 1983. After the fall of the Berlin Wall, from 1991 to 1995 he completed further training as a business economist (VWA) and administrative business economist (VWA).

Working life

From 1985 to 1989 Kreuch worked as a locksmith in the Wechmar vehicle factory. In the years of upheaval, i.e. 1989 to 1990, he was district manager of the Kulturverbund eV

After the communal structures were renewed and adapted to the Western model, Knut Kreuch held an office in the Department of Culture of the City of Gotha from 1991 to 1994. He then worked for four years as a press officer for the mayor a. D. Volker Doenitz in Gotha. However, he gave up this position in favor of his place of birth in order to become mayor of Günthersleben-Wechmar in 1998. Kreuch has been Lord Mayor of Gothas since July 1, 2006.

Political career

From 1989 to 1997 Kreuch was a member of the district council and deputy chairman of the SPD parliamentary group, which he joined in February 1990. From 1990 to 1994 he held the post of 1st alderman in Wechmar. In 1998 he became mayor of this place.

He has been Lord Mayor of Gotha since 2006, for which he ran again in the 2012 local elections. Kreuch was confirmed in his mayor's office on April 22, 2012 in the first ballot with a clear majority of 76.5% of the votes. In September 2012, Kreuch lost his majority in the Gotha City Council in a vote. In a close vote, his proposal for the replacement of the first deputy was rejected.

He was also confirmed in office in the local elections in 2018.

criticism

During his tenure, despite being a member of the Thuringian Monument Advisory Council, Kreuch demolished numerous listed buildings in Gotha, including the Villa Madelung (2007), the Winter Palace (2007), the Volkshaus zum Mohren (2007) including the historic "Mohrenviertel", the houses Nos. 9–11 and 13–15 in Brühl (2014) and the Kavaliershaus am Prinzenpalais (2017). The Winter Palace was only rebuilt in an outwardly historical form following pressure from a citizens' initiative. After the demolition of the Volkshaus zum Mohren, the Munich lawyer Johannes Wasmuth demanded that Mr. Kreuch be deprived of the “ Silver Hemisphere ” monument protection prize awarded to him in 2006 for his services to the preservation of the Studnitz country house in Wechmar .

During the election campaign in March 2012, it became known that prosecutors were investigating him on suspicion of breach of trust in connection with a termination agreement with the former managing director of Stadtwirtschaft. The investigations were discontinued because no breach of duty as the head of the city's supervisory board could be proven.

In addition to his work as Lord Mayor of Gotha, Knut Kreuch is also involved in many associations:

  • since 1982 chairman of the Wechmarer Heimatverein e. V.
  • since 1993 board member of the Wechmarer Carnevalsverein e. V.
