Otto Liebetrau (born August 6, 1855 in Gräfentonna ; † September 25, 1928 in Gotha ) was a German local politician.

Otto Liebetrau passed his Abitur at the Gotha Gymnasium Ernestinum and began studying law in Marburg , Leipzig and Jena in 1874 . In 1874 he became a member of the Arminia Marburg fraternity . He did one year military service (lieutenant in the reserve). After completing his studies, he was a trainee lawyer in Gotha, Ohrdruf and Tonna from 1878 . In 1880 he passed the assessor examination at the Jena Higher Regional Court and in 1881 became a district attorney at the Gotha district court .

From 1882 he was Senator and Deputy Mayor of Gotha. In 1890 he became mayor and in 1894 lord mayor. From 1892 to 1918 he was a member of the state parliament and at times, for example in 1911, president of the Gotha state parliament . During his 38-year term in office from 1890 to 1919, numerous public buildings were built, including the main post office (1889), a slaughterhouse (1890/1891), the district and regional court (1895/1896), a power station and the electric tram (1894 ), the Stadtbad (1905–1908), the synagogue (1903–1904), the Arnoldischule (1909–1911) and the Volkspark. He promoted social housing for the growing population and allowed the canalization, paving and street lighting begun under his predecessor to continue. On the occasion of his resignation from office, he was made an honorary citizen of the city of Gotha on December 31, 1919 .

Others

Liebetrau, whose marriage remained childless, together with his wife donated a large part of his fortune to the local history museum in Gotha, which opened in 1928 .

In 1992 a street in West Gotha was named. Liebetraustraße was called Reichsstraße from 1875 to 1919 and Fritz-Heilmann-Straße from 1978 to 1991.

The grave of Liebetrau and his wife Unna (August 20, 1862 to May 29, 1944) is located in the main cemetery in Gotha (part II, round of honor).
