Rolf Romero

Rolf Romero (born January 18, 1915 in Braunschweig ; † January 24, 2002 ) was a German architect and architectural historian .

Life

Rolf Romero studied architecture at the Technical University of Braunschweig . After graduating in 1939, he worked in Konstanty Gutschow's office in Hamburg. In 1942 he was called up for military service and returned with serious wounds. From 1945 to 1949 he was Friedrich Wilhelm Kraemer's office employee and his scientific assistant at the TH Braunschweig. In 1949 he received his doctorate with an architectural study on the work of Peter Joseph Krahe .

Until 1952 he worked as an architect in the office of Hoffmann and Kallmorgen in Hamburg, then until 1955 with Dieter Oesterlen in Hanover. It dealt in particular with the reconstruction of historically significant buildings. In 1956 he started his own business with Peter Huebotter in Hanover. His new churches in Hanover, Laatzen and on Heligoland were widely recognized. With the publisher Werner Kube he founded the "Neue Stadt GmbH" in 1958, which wanted to build a satellite town for up to 25,000 inhabitants in Heitlingen near Hanover.

1959 Romero received a reputation as a professor for designing, building history and church at the Technical University of Darmstadt , succeeding January Hubert Pinand . As a teacher, he was able to convey complex historical relationships by examining the different phases of urban development in the context of overarching processes of social change, including current urban planning trends. In 1970, together with Max Guther and Thomas Sieverts, he was the initiator of the “City Expert Group”, which still exists today and which gave important impetus to redefining the preservation of monuments in Germany.

In Darmstadt, he also ran a planning office with Lothar Willius († 1995) from 1961 to 1980, which implemented numerous high-rise buildings and projects for old town renovation and village renewal as well as church buildings.

In 1980 he retired and also ended his work as an architect.
