Hornau is one of the six districts of Kelkheim (Taunus) in the Hessian Main-Taunus district . Hornau is the fourth largest district of Kelkheim with around 4200 inhabitants.
location
It is located in the Vortaunus , around 20 km northwest of Frankfurt am Main . Hornau lies on both sides of the Liederbach , a right tributary of the Main . To the left and right of the valley, the terrain rises partly steeply. To the north of Hornau lies forest, in the other directions there are orchards and urban development.
The development of Hornau merges directly with that of Kelkheim-Mitte in the south , and in the west it is separated from that of the Fischbach district by a strip that is only 200 meters narrow . The Königstein district of Schneidhain is about two kilometers north of Hornau, the Bad Soden district of Altenhain about one kilometer to the east.
history
It was first mentioned in a document in 874, so it can be seen as a Franconian foundation. The municipality of Hornau was merged with the villages of Kelkheim and Münster in 1938 to form the city of Kelkheim. Today, Hornau is primarily an artist's district among the locals.
Infrastructure
The center of the district is located on the Liederbach around Hornauer Straße and Rotlintallee . The most important inner city main street is the Gagernring . The federal highways 8 and 519 run on the eastern edge of Hornau .
Hornau has a station on the Königsteiner Bahn , a suburban railway line that runs from Königstein via Kelkheim and the Frankfurt-Höchst train station to Frankfurt Central Station . There are also several Rhein-Main-Verkehrsverbund bus routes .
Churches
There are two parishes in Hornau , the Protestant Stephanus parish in the street Am Flachsland (see Stephanuskirche (Hornau) ) and the Catholic parish of St. Martin in Rotlintallee . In addition to the Martinskirche, which is in use today, there is still the previous building from 1725, the oldest church building in the Kelkheim city area. The old Martinskirche belongs to the building complex of the Hofgut of the von Gagern family ( Heinrich von Gagern was President of the National Assembly in Frankfurt's Paulskirche in 1848/49 ). The church was built in place of a chapel mentioned in 1490. The former courtyard house, now the parsonage, dates from around 1830. The old Hornau cemetery still has numerous listed graves of the Gagerns. In 1952 the church was profaned and renovated inside and outside from 1974 to 1977. Since 1952 the new Martinskirche opposite on the other side of the brook has been used.
Opposite the church are the Gagernsteine. The Gagernsteine are a reminder of the von Gagern family who lived in Hornau from 1818 to 1866. We remember Hans Christoph Freiherr von Gagern , his wife Charlotte and their ten children (of whom Friedrich , Heinrich and Maximilian became known as pioneers of liberalism).
Education and leisure
The Hornau primary school bears the name of a member of the most famous family in the area: Max-von-Gagern-Schule . On the northern edge of the district is the Am Reis sports facility , home of the local sports club TuS Hornau .
Worth seeing

At the Liederbach lies the fox cave , which legend says the minstrel Heinrich von Ofterdingen retired to after his defeat in the war of singers on the Wartburg (1206). The Liederbach owes its name to its sad songs. In fact, at the instigation of Friedrich von Gagern, the cave was carved out of the rock in order to have a resting place for his meditations.
The core of Hornau offers a beautiful sight with cobblestones and old buildings. The oldest half-timbered house in Hornau is also located here. The building was constructed in 1568 and is privately owned.
