Kosugi Hōan ( Japanese 小 杉 放 庵 ; born December 30, 1881 ; died April 16, 1964 ) was a Japanese painter of the Western Yōga style . His late work also shows features of the “Japanese style” .

Live and act

Kosugi was born in Nikkō ( Tochigi Prefecture ) as the son of the priest of the local Futarasan shrine . His original first name was Kunitarō ( 国 太郎 ). At the age of 15 he learned to paint in the Yōga style under Ioki Bunsai ( 五百 城 文 哉 ; 1863-1906) In 1898 he went to Tōkyō and studied further under Koyama Shōtarō (1857-1916) in his school Fudōsha ( 不同 舎 ).

His first exhibition as an artist took place as part of the Taiheiyō gakai ( 太平洋 画 会 ), where he used the artist's first name "Misei" ( 未醒 ). In the Japanese-Russian War he followed the troops as a painter and worked as a correspondent for the Kinji Gahō-sha ( 近 事 畫報社 ) under its director, the writer Kunikida Doppo . He was also known for his small-format newspaper pictures ( bilder 絵 , sashie ), which he drew for various magazines.

From 1908 he exhibited at the state exhibition “Bunten” and won prizes for his pictures “Village on the Water” ( 水 郷 , Suigō ; 1911) and “Bean Harvest” ( 豆 の 秋 , Mame no aki ; 1912), which have a decorative image demonstrate.

In 1913 he went to Europe and there learned the big difference between western and local art. Back in the following year he took part in the rebuilding of Nihon Bijutsuin , within which he became the central figure in the Department of Western Painting. Pictures from this time are "Wong Cho Ping" "The Hunter" ( 山 幸 彦 ; Yamasachihiko ; 1917) and " Laozi leaves China" ( 老子 出 漢 ; Rōshi shukkan ; 1919;) - In 1922 he was involved in the founding of the Shunyō artists' association. kai ( 春陽 会 ) involved.

Kosugi came into contact with Chinese culture at an early age and did not forget this experience as he approached Western art. In 1927 he walked in the footsteps of Basho when he made his way through northern Japan. Little by little, his subjects and style approached traditional painting. From 1929 he called himself Hōan, it was the time in which he largely switched to Japanese painting.

Kosugi is also known for his poems and essays. - In 1997 a museum, the "Kosugi Hōan Kinen Nikkō bijutsukan" ( 小 杉 放 菴 記念 日光 美術館 ) was opened for him at his place of birth .
