A kotamo

The kotamo is a stringed instrument that was developed in the 21st century. It combines three instruments from three different cultures on a single body of sound : Ko to , Ta npura and Mo nochord . Its sound is characterized by warm and long lingering tones with a wide range of overtones . Soothing, meditative sounds can be elicited from the instrument .

The koto , a Japanese zither with 13 silk-wound strings and sliding individual bridges , has a clear, soft sound. Different western and eastern moods can be attuned.

The tanpura is a four-string Indian drone lute and, with its typical whirring, long lingering tone, gives the kotamo a sound carpet on which the clear tones of the koto are deposited.

If you turn the Kotamo once around the axis, the monochord becomes playable. With up to 30 strings it is usually tuned monotonously and forms a floating fullness of sound with countless overtones .
