Koum Kouat from Corfu ( Greek κερκυραϊκό κουμ κουάτ kerkyraiko koum kouat ) is a protected designation of origin for a liqueur made from kumquats from the Greek island of Corfu .

The liqueur is made from the fruit extract and refined with various herbs. It is considered a mild liqueur with a sweet, fruity taste (“ similar to oranges and strawberries ”) and contains 20-25% alcohol . The liqueur is mainly drunk neat or on ice, but is also found in local cuisine, where it is often used to refine sweets and desserts.

When exactly the kumquat was cultivated in Corfu, there are various details. According to legend, a British botanist brought the fruit from Asia to the island between 1846 and 1860. Nowadays, the fruit is mainly grown in the northern part of the island.
